First-time buyers in England pay 0% SDLT on the first £425,000 and 5% on the portion from £425,001 to £625,000. If the property costs more than £625,000, no first-time buyer relief applies and standard rates are used. To qualify, neither buyer can have previously owned residential property anywhere in the world.
When must SDLT be paid after completion?↓
SDLT must be filed and paid within 14 days of completion. Your solicitor or conveyancer will typically handle this on your behalf. Late filing incurs automatic penalties: £100 for up to 3 months late, £200 for 3–12 months, then 5–10% of the tax due for longer delays.
