Frequently Asked Questions

Do I legally need a health and safety policy?

In the UK, any business with 5 or more employees must have a written health and safety policy under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Businesses with fewer than 5 employees still have H&S duties but are not required to write them down. In the US, there is no federal OSHA requirement for a written safety program for all industries, but sector-specific standards (construction, chemicals, healthcare) mandate written programs.

What should a health and safety policy include?

A complete H&S policy has three parts: (1) General statement — your commitment to health and safety and who is responsible; (2) Organisation — who does what (directors, managers, employees, contractors); (3) Arrangements — how you manage specific risks (e.g. manual handling, fire safety, first aid, DSE, PPE). The UK HSE provides guidance on each section.

How often should the policy be reviewed?

Review your H&S policy at least annually, or whenever significant changes occur — new premises, new processes, changes in workforce size, or following an accident or near miss. Always date and version-control your policy document.
