Frequently Asked Questions

Who is responsible for fire safety in a workplace?

The "responsible person" under UK fire law is the employer, owner, or occupier of the premises. They must carry out a fire risk assessment, implement fire safety measures, ensure staff are trained, and maintain fire equipment. For premises with multiple occupiers, each must cooperate with the others.

How often should fire extinguishers be serviced?

UK fire extinguishers require annual inspection by a competent person (BSI-certified engineer). Water, foam, and powder extinguishers need extended service every 5 years. CO2 extinguishers need hydraulic testing every 10 years. Check the service label on each extinguisher for the last inspection date.

What types of fire extinguisher are needed in an office?

For most UK offices: water or water mist extinguishers for paper/cardboard fires (Class A), and CO2 extinguishers for electrical equipment fires (Class E). Foam extinguishers can cover Class A and B (flammable liquids). The minimum for a small office is typically one 2kg CO2 and one 6L water or foam extinguisher.
