Frequently Asked Questions

How many first aiders do I need?

In the UK, the number of first aiders depends on your workplace risk level and workforce size. Low-risk (e.g. offices): 1 first aider per 50 employees, or an appointed person for fewer than 25. High-risk (e.g. construction): 1 trained first aider per 50 employees, with at least 1 when 5+ workers are on site. Always consider shift patterns and remote workers.

What is the difference between an appointed person and a first aider?

An appointed person takes charge when someone is injured (calls 999, maintains kit) but has no full first aid training. A qualified first aider has completed a First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate (3-day course, valid 3 years) or Emergency First Aid at Work (1-day, for low-risk environments). Appointed persons are the minimum for very small, low-risk workplaces.

Do first aid kits expire?

Individual items (sterile dressings, antiseptic wipes) have expiry dates. Most BSi-compliant kits are designed for 5 years, but contents should be checked monthly and replenished after use. Sterile dressings typically expire in 3-5 years. Medicines and antiseptics expire faster. Check the kit contents list quarterly.
