Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs a DSE assessment?
In the UK, the DSE Regulations 1992 apply to "users" — employees who habitually use display screen equipment as a significant part of their normal work (typically more than 1 hour continuously per day). This includes office workers, home workers, hot-deskers, and those using laptops. The regulations do not apply to workers who only occasionally use screens.
Do DSE regulations apply to remote and home workers?
Yes. The UK DSE Regulations apply equally to home workers. Employers must ensure home workstations are assessed, provide suitable equipment if needed, and cover eye test costs. During COVID-19, the HSE issued guidance confirming these obligations remain for permanent remote workers.
How often should a DSE assessment be repeated?
A DSE assessment should be repeated when: a new user starts using a workstation, there is a significant change to the workstation setup, a user reports discomfort or injury, or the type of work changes significantly. For stable setups, reviewing every 2 years is generally sufficient.
