eBay's fee structure has changed significantly since the introduction of managed payments. Here is a complete breakdown of what eBay charges sellers in 2025 and how to maximise your take-home per sale.

eBay's Fee Structure
Final Value Fees (FVF)
The primary fee charged when you sell an item. Rates vary by category:
- Most categories: 13.25% of the total sale amount (item + shipping)
- Vehicles and Motors: 2.75% (capped at $150)
- Select electronics: 8.25%
- Books and magazines: 14.5%
- Sporting goods: 12.5%
The FVF cap for most categories is $750 per transaction.
Managed Payments Processing Fees
Since eBay moved all sellers to managed payments (powered by Adyen), every transaction also incurs a processing fee:
- 2.7% of the total transaction amount + $0.30 per order
This replaces the old PayPal fees. The total effective rate (FVF + processing) for most categories is around 15-17%.
Insertion Fees
eBay provides a monthly allowance of free listings (250 for most sellers). After this allowance, each listing costs $0.35. Store subscribers receive higher allowances.
Additional Fees to Know
- Promoted Listings Standard: variable ad rate on top of FVF
- eBay Store subscription: $4.95/month (Starter) to $349.95/month (Enterprise) with reduced FVF and more free listings
- International selling fees: additional 1.65% for transactions with international buyers
Does eBay Charge Fees on Shipping?
Yes. The final value fee applies to the total amount paid by the buyer, including any shipping charges. This means offering free shipping and building it into your item price can simplify your fee calculation, though it does not reduce the total fees paid.
How to Reduce eBay Fees
- Open an eBay Store — Store subscribers get reduced FVF rates (typically 1-3% lower) and much higher free listing allowances. At high volume, the subscription pays for itself quickly
- Offer combined shipping — reduces post-sale service issues without directly affecting fees
- Choose the right category — listing in the correct category avoids paying higher rates
- Use Buy It Now instead of auction — auctions have the same FVF but take longer to convert and may sell below your target price
- Factor all fees into your starting price — price backward from your required net proceeds
eBay vs Other Platforms
eBay's 15-17% total rate is competitive with Amazon (17-20%) but higher than Etsy (18-22% for most items) for many product types. eBay's advantage is huge buyer traffic, no monthly subscription required, and strong performance for used goods, collectibles, and electronics.
