What is the VAT rate in Sweden?↓
Sweden has a standard VAT rate of 25% (Mervärdesskatt, commonly called Moms). A reduced rate of 12% applies to food and non-alcoholic beverages, restaurant and catering services, hotel accommodation, and certain cultural services. A 6% rate applies to public transport, books, newspapers, magazines, and concerts. Sweden ties with Denmark and Hungary for the highest VAT rates in the EU.
What is exempt from VAT in Sweden?↓
Swedish Moms exemptions include: healthcare and medical services, dental care, social welfare services, educational services at recognised institutions, most financial and insurance services, and residential property letting. Swedish VAT law follows EU VAT directives closely, so the exempt categories broadly align with other EU member states. Exemption does not allow input VAT recovery on related purchases.
When must a business register for VAT in Sweden?↓
Swedish businesses must register for Moms once annual taxable turnover exceeds SEK 80,000. Below this threshold, a small business exemption applies. Foreign businesses without a Swedish establishment must register from their first taxable supply in Sweden with no threshold, unless using the EU One Stop Shop (OSS) for B2C digital services. VAT registration is handled through the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).
