British Columbia charges a combined 12% sales tax: 5% federal GST plus 7% British Columbia PST (Provincial Sales Tax), collected separately.

Unlike HST provinces, BC collects GST federally and PST provincially as two separate taxes. Some goods are exempt from PST but not GST and vice versa.

Frequently Asked Questions, Sales Tax Calculator in British Columbia

What is the BC sales tax rate?

British Columbia has a 5% federal GST and a 7% provincial PST, for a combined effective rate of 12% on most purchases. Unlike Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, BC has not harmonized these into a single HST. Businesses must register and remit each tax separately.

What is exempt from BC PST?

BC PST exemptions include: basic groceries, prescription drugs, most children's clothing, bicycles, and farming equipment. Restaurant meals, electronics, vehicles, and most retail goods are subject to PST. The GST applies separately with its own set of zero-rated and exempt items.

When do I need to register for BC PST?

You must register for BC PST if you sell taxable goods or services in BC and have annual BC sales exceeding $10,000. Unlike GST, there is no small supplier exemption for PST once you exceed this threshold. Registration is done through the BC government's eTaxBC system.
